Blogging Habits

I sit at my computer first thing in the morning and read the fresh blogs that come out of the oven. I try to catch up with any I may have missed the night before. I usually go to my blog and then go through my blog roll that I have then go to RPG Bloggers Network and read a new blog or two. Another source where I find new blogs is when people make comments on my site or someone else's I'll go through their profile and check out what they have to say.

Now sometimes at work I'll sneak a peek during my lunch which I usually am working through. But usually then I am on RPG Now checking out the new items and I always check the freebie bin. I love the freebie bin.

When I get home for work I'll get back on and see who posted during the day. This is when I post my comments. I make an effort to comment on a few blogs a day. I could probably do more, but there are a ton of great blogs and I can't get to them all. Time Shadows and Paladin in a Citadel are the champion commenter's. Those two have hit everywhere some days and I commend them for it. Those comments do help motivate and inspire people to keep going that what they are doing is being recognized. I know when I first started those comments helped.

Writing my blogs, which has been sporadic over the past couple months, I try to do at night and then have them post around 7am or so the next day. Then the other half of the time I am writing them in the morning. Like right now.

I was curious about others blogging habits. When they write, when they read, and what makes them comment on some blogs but not others? Have a great Friday and a get a game going this weekend.

I just saw this will be my 100th post and I want to thank the people who've commented on my site and those who just like to browse for a while. I've enjoyed myself.

  1. My blogging habits are very similar to your and I agree that getting comments, even negative ones does help to motivate me. As for which blogs I decide to comment on it varies. Usually the ones I tend to notice are ones that have a post about a particular game I'm interested in or like this one a topic that catches my eye. I'm not a 4e player so I usually skip those. I'm not an old school player so those often hold little interest for me. Honestly my least favorite posts are about rules, and world building I don't know why but I just don't enjoy reading those. The more "technical" the less interesting for me.
Posts about gaming habits, product reviews, favorite/least favorite lists, industry news, and opinion pieces tend to be my most frequented posts on other sites. Your post is a good example. Looking on my Yahoo front page, I have the RPGBN feed at the top for easy access, the first post I noticed was this one. I immediately clicked on it and here I am. You were the first RPGBN post I read this morning.

  2. Just to clarify, I'm not in any way speaking ill of the more technical posts. I'm just the type that if I want technical I'll read one of the rule books. It is nothing against blogs that do that, as they seem to be much more popular than my blog, so they must be doing something right. They just aren't my cup of tea.

  3. My habits are quite similar to yours, I could in many ways copy and paste it as an entry on my blog.

As for why I post on some and not others, it comes to one reason.

How much time do I have right at the moment I read it to write the comment I want to write. If I have a big reply, I might not get to it right now (and then delay, delay and forget, unfortunately)

  4. I usually write my posts in the evening, while listening to a hockey game online. I comment less than I did even 6 months ago and usually comment to express appreciation rather than disagreement.

As far as topics go, much of what I post is driven by my own gaming. However, I do try to mix up the topics between house rules (so long as I can express them simply), ideas, new critters, and haiku.

  5. > warm smile < :D

I am on virtually 16 hours (+) and so I am constantly blog-reading, mixed with Castle Age, EditPad/Word/some art programme, and a few .pdfs open at any given moment as I write.

I power up the unit, let it settle-in (gets cranky if it hasn't had time to shake hands with all the tasktray programmes running in the background), then I start up Thunderbird and see if anyone has commented on my blog, then I start up Firefox and start scrolling through my ever-expanding blogroll. Pandora radio or Winamp start up soon thereafter.

Food breaks, tea-refills, and random TV-breaks interspersed.

    Rinse, repeat.

  6. I tend to read the blogs in the morning when I get up, and occasionally throughout the day as work allows. I, too, troll the various blog lists on the side of each blog I read regularly, looking for interesting titles to check out. Most of my comments tend to be done in the evening (where I check out any updates that I may have missed). When I write, it tends to be in the evening, when I have the most time, but I've been known to post a small topic at other times as the mood and opportunity hits.

    Hope This Helps,
    Flynn

  7. Thanks everyone for their comments. I didn't have much a gaming idea that morning, but was sitting there wondering about other's habits about blogging.
